Canadian cinema may still be struggling to get films financed, produced and, above all, exhibited on Canadian screens, but after a fallow period when little was published in book form, a number of critical studies have recently appeared. In the latest volume William Beard and Jerry White have brought together over thirty essays from academics and others, which collectively encompass feature film, Aboriginal work, the avant-garde and animation. The institutional side is less well covered - although there is a perceptive essay by Charles Acland which questions some received truths about exhibition - on the perfectly legitimate grounds that it has been well enough covered elsewhere. Quebec cinema is omitted for the same reason, and because the editors prefer the 'two national cinemas' approach to the Canadian situation. There are useful chapters on a number of well established figures and chapters too which certainly encouraged this reader to seek out the work of a number of lesser-known ones. …
