If you are a woman, or indeed a man, working in a British university currently undergoing managerial change then this book is a must read! It reveals how our future careers may be affected by the 'corporate revolution' and provides a timely warning about where not to follow. It is something of a cliché to say that where North America goes the United Kingdom follows; nonetheless, if this vision represents the likely future for academics and students here, it is a bleak one.

This book, in some 300 pages, tackles the nastier and seamier sides of managerialism and measurement within modern seats of learning. Both academics and administrators have spoken frankly concerning the changes which managerialism has brought to their professions. Such change, it is argued, is the product of globalisation, part of the discourse of neo-liberalism and its efforts to discredit the authority of those speaking for the old-fashioned notions of public good and social justice (p. 13). In this virtual North American U. entrepreneurialism dominates, students become consumers, and faculty mere facilitators of the student movement into the global economy.
