Transgressive Itineraries follows such literary studies as Diana Brydon and Helen Tiffin's Decolonising Fictions and Terry Goldie's Fear and Temptation, examining the connections and contrasts between English-language Canadian, Australian and New Zealand postcolonial literature. Maufort utilises the critical terminology of Homi Bhabha, in particular the terms 'hybridity' and 'mimicry', in order to explore the identity crisis of playwrights who use their dramatic works to negotiate the complex relationship between self and other in the postcolonial context. Maufort feels that the marginality of this 'trans-Pacific Axis' (p. 12) of former colonies enables writers from these nations to undermine the legacy of the imperial centre (p. 19).

Maufort's study is ambitious and wide-ranging. The text is divided into three chapters. The first focuses on playwrights from the established anglophone settler communities from the three countries, including Canadians George Walker and Judith Thompson. The second chapter examines the 'multicultural vistas' (p. 85) provided by playwrights from immigrant communities, including the Argentinean-Canadian Guillermo Verdecchia, African-Canadians George Seremba and Djanet Sears, and Chinese-Canadian Betty Quan. The final chapter looks at Aboriginal theatre from Australia, New Zealand and Canada, focusing on works by Tomson Highway, Daniel David Moses and Drew Hayden Taylor. …
