This publication contains over 14,000 individual entries in a single-volume chronology of Canadian history and achievements across Canada and around the world. The volume was constructed by a team of more than 25 researchers, editors and other contributors. Their collective role, under the editorial direction of Richard Pound, was to find and validate significant facts, events, dates, people, and places that comprise the rich tapestry of the nation's heritage from earliest known history to the social, cultural, business and political events of the contemporary age

A wide spectrum of fields, from education, science and technology to federal, provincial and local politics, law and crime, pollution, conservation, as well as icons of Canadian identity such as the pursuit of a just society, are part of the topics ordered day by day and year by year. Diverse areas such as the environment, national parks and natural resources, women's and human rights, Aboriginal treaties and land claims, are all catalogued, along with developments in industry, agriculture, transportation and the military. The account opens with a very brief introduction to the basic geological background, and First Peoples. The 'Common Era' takes us from AD 300 to the end of the nineteenth century in around 330 pages. Thus two thirds of the volume are devoted to events of the twentieth century, Wilfred Laurier's 'century that belonged to Canada'. This is logically divided into sections: 1900-1924; 1925-1949; 1950-1974; 1975-1989; and 1990-1999; and for this latest edition 2000-2003. …
