The compilers of this series represent the Royal Academy of Music, London, the Guildford School of Acting, and include a school music teacher, a composer, and leading music educator in England. Over 100 art songs and sixty traditional folk songs from twenty-six different countries were chosen to provide a large source for those students preparing for the Royal Schools of Music graded singing exams. The compilers' note states: "The foremost thought in our minds was how the structure of the exam should inform the early stages of programme planning for a recital." The songs are drawn from folk, classical, music theater, and light music styles to provide a wide range of variety for interesting programming. Consideration was also given to a variety of technical demands suitable for each grade level for as wide an age range as possible.

Each volume contains the Introduction to the series, the compilers' note, notes on the editorial approach, notes on the art songs, brief notes on the folk songs, and a CD with piano accompaniments and spoken pronunciation guides for every foreign language text.
