G. Schirmer Opera Anthology Diction Coach

Article excerpt

G. SCHIRMER OPERA ANTHOLOGY DICTION COACH. Coloratura Arias for Soprano, Arias for Soprano, Arias for Soprano, Volume 2, Arias for Mezzo-Soprano, Arias for Tenor, Arias for Baritone, and Arias for Bass. CDs included. G. Schirmer, Inc., 2008 (Hal Leonard).

The Diction Coach series for G. Schirmer's various anthologies has been extended to the Opera Anthology series. Each volume contains a Preface concerning the diction recordings, notes about the IPA in each language, a CD track list, and the full text of each aria with IPA transcription and word for word translation. The texts are read on the CDs by native speakers in each language: Corradina Caporello, Italian; Kathryn LaBouff, English; Gina Levinson, Russian; Irene Spiegelman, German; and Pierre Vallet, French. As noted in an earlier review of this series for the art song anthologies, these volumes are a wonderful source of help for singers preparing an aria for the first time. Although the CD recitation is not a substitute for an expert diction coach in the studio, it can be excellent preparation for direct work with such a coach.
