PASSAGES: Barbara Cloud

Barbara Cloud, former associate provost for academic affairs and a professor emerita of journalism and media at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, died Dec. 24, 2009, days after suffering from a cerebral hemorrhage. She was 71.

Cloud was born in Tulare, Calif., and raised in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She earned her bachelor's degree from Stanford University, her master's degree from the University of Oregon, and her Ph.D. from the University of Washington. Prior to her years at UNLV, Cloud was a reporter for the Idaho Falls Post-Register and the Bend (Ore.) Bulletin, and news editor of the Springfield (Ore.) News. Cloud also had stints as a public relations consultant in Australia and as a freelance writer in Los Angeles.

In 1979, she began her career at UNLV, where she was department chair in the late 1980s. In 1998, she was named associate provost, a ijosition she held for five years. Cloud also headed the UNLV Phi Kappa Phi honorary society and helped in founding the university's chapter of Kappa Tau Alpha, a journalism and mass communications honor society. …
