One year before the masthead

After writing the above title, I realized that I could hardly be the first editor to think of playing with Richard Henry Dana's classic title; sure enough, a quick Web search turns up hundreds of thousands of hits in confirmation. Blazingly original it may not be, but all those editors must have found it as apt as I do - I've learned that the job of a journal editor is exciting, sometimes rugged, and demands acquiring one's "sea legs" for the journey. One year into my editorship, I am abundantly grateful to all who have been on the voyage with me through the previous four seasons. To our readers, a happy new year, and welcome to Volume 61.

It is also the time of year when we welcome members to the staff of THE HYMN. Donna Hamilton and Dan Damon join us as our Hymn Interpretation and Hymn Performance columnists for 2010. David Furniss will be bringing us Reviews of Hymn-based Recordings; we thank S T Kmbrough, Jr., for a final review in this issue. I look forward to working with our new crew members, grateful not only for what they offer to THE HYMN, but for their many gifts of time and talent to The Hymn Society over the years.

We also extend a hearty "ahoy" to Geoffrey C. Moore, who is coming on Board - quite literally, as he joins the Editorial Advisory Board. We are gratefill that he will become a part of the important work of reviewing feature articles that are submitted to THE HYMN.

In this issue I commend to you some excellent features. First, Paul Richardson enthusiastically invites us to the historic city of Birmingham, Alabama, and the lovely campus of Samford University. Our summer conference promises to be another outstanding occasion for The Hymn Society, as you will see in the brochure for "Sing of Justice - Sing of Peace," July 11-15, 2010.
