Shirley Erena Murray, named a Fellow of The Hymn Society at the July conference, received her certificate from Executive Director Deb Loftis at a hymn conference in Palmerston North, Aotearoa New Zealand, in October. It was a weekend of great celebration for Shirley; in addition to receiving the certificate to the cheers and applause of her friends and colleagues, it was also announced that she would be awarded an honorary doctorate in December from Otago University in Dunedin, New Zealand. Kudos to our newest Fellow!

Speaking at the conference dinner, Deb also explained the work of The Hymn Society and congratulated the group on holding their first national hymn conference. (Participants are already looking ahead to more!) She closed by leading the group in singing two hymns that supported the conference theme. "Let justice flow down," by Canadian Douglas Romanow, was part of our Hymn Society festival at the international hymn conference in Poland this past summer. "What is the world like," with words by Adam M. L. Tice and tune by Sally Ann Morris, was the second selection. If you attended our own conference last year at St. Olaf College, you will remember singing this latter hymn at the close of the festival led by Lovelace Scholars. …
