Publication of a first volume of fifty hymn texts by a young author is an event unexpected in these days of economic uncertainty in the world of publishing. This collection by Adam M. L. Tice, however, has been offered by its publisher with unmistakable confidence.

A note (on the back of the title page) acknowledges the publisher's commitment "to the work of this writer," adding that "this publication represents a desire to introduce his work to the larger community." In an effort to do this, GIA is making hymns in this collection available in downloadable files for worship bulletins. The inclusion of melodies and accompaniments, both traditional and new, and the inclusion of the poetic form of each hymn printed on the pages facing their interlined musical settings increase the accessibility and therefore potential usefulness of this collection. A generous foreword by Carl P. Daw, Jr., FHS, confirms one's first impression that this volume is a treasury of both depth and freshness.

The several indices in the book will be helpful to worship leaders. The volume's contents are searchable according to scriptural, liturgical, topical, composers, sources, metrical, tune, title, and first-line listings.

Adam M. L. Tice was born on October 11, 1979. Through the brief paragraph by the author which introduces each hymn, and the volume's preface, the reader is introduced to the strong supporting foundation for the development of Adam's creative gifts that the many Mennonite communities of which he has been a part have provided. Since 2007, he has been associate pastor of Hyattsville Mennonite Church in Hyattsville, Maryland. …
