The greatest disaster ever facing humanity,

She sailed into the distance like so many cigarettes

While trace elements gathered pace in the wind.

And it was enough to remind them of all that mattered,

Past lumbering icebergs and archipelagos of indifference.

He wanted to know everything or nothing about her.

If she was dainty nobody stopped to remind her,

An intersection's tangled skirt confronting humanity.

They misinterpreted her independence as indifference.

She never coughed on her father's cigarettes

But it was the projection of worldliness that mattered

When the date was over, he kept company with the wind.

He gathers leaves, a baseball cap shifting in Autumn's wind.

The villagers thought they had come for him but it was for her -

She kept a journal, not that it mattered.

But everyday he was away it dented her humanity.

When the machetes come there will be no time for cigarettes,

Just fallen bodies surprised by their indifference.

Afternoon ends in jazz, gin and indifference

Swept up Main Street, two golden boys in a Westerly wind.

The company cuts out time for cigarettes.

On the steps it was the last he saw of her. …
