Turning from the parent trap he set a blazing trail

now all he wanted was to see their names in lights -

the youngest still had cute and blonde on her side,

the eldest knew which face to pull to get the biggest laugh.

Climbing onto his lap but not settling in, too much partying

to be done: the camera rolling for posterity

lest they forget how much fun he could have been.

Eyes fixed as kewpie dolls on Show Day, lighting candles

on their father's cake they make a silent wish that this

is where it all begins: Dad and the kids.

But how to say we are your brightest lights

when the caravan is a laminate of holiday cheer

enlarging the promise of same time next year

and shrinking the thought behind the gift

(a quit smoking pack) smouldering somewhere

over there just out of shot. …
