Jan. 22: George Mitchell, US Special Envoy to the Middle East, met with Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmud 'Abbas to advocate for peace negotiations, although US President Barack Obama claimed that his efforts for a peaceful deal "may have been overambitious." Chief Palestinian negotiator Sa'ib 'Erekat claimed that the dialogue between both parties was thorough but criticized American efforts to negotiate without complete settlement halts. Expectations for productive breakthroughs were low among all parties. [Al-Arabiya, 1/22]

Jan. 29: Hamas claimed that one of its senior officials, Mahmud al-Mabhuh, was murdered in a hotel room in Dubai the previous week, accusing Israel of the crime and threatening retaliation. Dubai police stated that a "professional criminal gang" committed the crime. Al-Mabhuh was a founder of Hamas' military wing and participated in attacks against Israel. [NYT, 1/29]

Apr. 4: For the first time since 2007, Israel permitted a commercial shipment of clothing and shoes into the Gaza Strip. Ten trucks were allowed into the Hamascontrolled area, though extended storage time damaged much of the material inside. Gaza had been under an Israeli and Egyptian blockade since Hamas assumed control of the region, leading to a shortage of many basic materials. …
