Jan. 14: A bomb exploded in Jordan near a car holding three Israeli diplomats; no one was injured. Jordan was one of few Arab countries to have had a diplomatic relationship with Israel, but ties were strained after a 2000 Palestinian uprising in the West Bank and Gaza led to an Israeli "crackdown." Jan. 24: US Special Envoy to the Middle East George Mitchell met King Abdullah II of Jordan after having met with Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu. Mitchell's goal in the region was to revive "year-old" talks between Israeli and Palestinian leaders which had been halted, partially because of Israeli settlement construction. Mitchell also spoke with Palestinian President Mahmud 'Abbas and stated that the US supported peace in the Middle East and a two-state solution. [AP, 1/24]
