These two catalogues, which together describe some 213 medieval manuscripts containing musical notation from fifteen libraries in Alsace, Franche -Com té, and Lorraine, are the first of a new series edited by Christian Meyer, which is to be extended to include all the public libraries of France. Catalogues for the region Nord-Pas-de-Calais and for Champagne -Ardenne and Bourgogne are already in progress. They can be used together with the reference tools assembled by Meyer on his CMN website: www.univ_nancy2.fr/MOYENAGE/ UREEF/MUSICOLOGIE/CMN/indexcmn.htm. A number of the libraries in the regions covered by the first two volumes have suffered enormous losses in relatively modern times, the total destruction of the Strasbourg manuscript collection in 1 870 and the huge losses sustained by Metz in 1944 being the most notable cases. The most substantial surviving collection of local material is that in Colmar, which has manuscripts from the Cistercian abbeys of Pairis and Lucelle as well as the wonderful holdings from the male and female Dominican houses in the town. The Sélestat collection combines a late medieval town library with the collection of humanist books put together by Beatus Rhenanus, but it does not have the books from the local monasteries. Similarly, for the region of Besançon, where the manuscripts come mostly from private collections, it is the cathedral of Saint-Jean which is well represented rather than the monasteries. Indeed, very little has survived from the abbeys of Franche-Comté, such as Luxeuil, La Charité, and Bellevaux. In Lorraine there are important collections from Saint- Vanne near Verdun, from Saint-Arnoul in Metz (some manuscripts having been preserved as photographs), and from the charterhouse of Marienfloss at Rettel on the Moselle. …
