A collection of prose lives probably copied, and perhaps composed, in the middle of the fifteenth century at Syon Abbey or the nearby Sheen Charterhouse. The Lives of St John and of St Jerome draw on the writings of Birgitta of Sweden, patron saint of Syon Abbey; this connection is confirmed by palaeographical evidence. The collection with Syon may also reflect the interest of the Carthusians in promoting devotional writing both in Latin and in the vernacular. The Lives are contained in three manuscripts, but all are written in the same hand and on parchment of a similar size. The Lives of John the Baptist and John the Evangelist have not previously been edited and exist only in Cambridge, St John's College, MS N. …
