Parisian Confraternity Drama of the Fourteenth Century: The 'Miracles de Nostre Dame par personnages' ed. Most of the contents of this volume are revised versions of papers presented at a conference, held at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, on the forty plays found in Paris, BnFMS 819-20; although one, the contribution of Graham Runnalls, is a reprint of an article that first appeared i-cvMedium A.evum in 1970. These plays, performed between 1339 and 1382 at the annual gathering of a confraternity associated with the Parisian Goldsmiths' Guild, are an invaluable source for the study of medieval French theatre and its social context, yet they have received surprisingly little scholarly attention. In view of the pioneering work carried out by Runnalls on the plays and the social context of their production, it is very fitting that his article on the medieval trade guilds should appear in this collection, which one can hope may be the beginning of more widespread interest in the plays, the manuscript that transmits them, and the circumstances of their original composition and performance. …
