Olschki, 2009). vi + 283 pp. ISBN 978-88-222-5860-1. euro25.00. A systematic investigation of metaphor in Dante is long overdue. This volume, as promised by its title, delivers just that. As its essays acknowledge, metaphor has not been ignored in Dante studies, but this collection presents the issue in an organized and coherent way - one that provides not only a veritable treasure trove of bibliographical information, but also direction for future research. The volume is elegantly constructed. It opens with Marco Ariani's discussion of the theoretical background informing Dante's treatment of metaphor and concludes with Mario Paolo Tassone's investigation of how the poet's recourse to metaphor was received by his first commentators. The other five essays address particular 'semantic fields' - as most contributors refer to them - namely, sets of metaphorical meanings intricately connected and carrying significant weight throughout Dante's works. …
