This issue features the outcome of AATCs new "competition" - for the best research essay written by a German Studies graduate student. The prize is publication in GQ - and the first winner is Kai Löser, then a student at UNC-Chapel Hill. This enterprise is inspiring in many ways: the high level of submissions and their enthusiastic professorial endorsements tell us that German Studies continues to flourish in its most essential zone, where literature and culture are passionately engaged. And the intensity is premised on that key element of advanced research, as explored in our Forum of 82.4, close reading. Literary texts do not change, but everything around them does: the understanding of history, the evaluation of literature's metaphysical function, and our consciousness of the roles of experience, both author 's and reader 's, in the crystallization of verbal structures. …
