Creating a Culture of Collaboration: Best Conference Papers (2010)

This issue features four articles developed from the best papers presented at the ALISE 2009 Conference, as judged by the JELIS Editorial Board and a Blue Ribbon Panel. The articles deal with the spectrum of faculty responsibilities and resonate clearly with the conference theme: Creating a Culture of Collaboration. Sidath Gunawardena, Rosine Weber, and Denise E. Agosto provide a pathway for LIS educators to new forms of interdisciplinary scholarship through their examination of collaboration from multiple disciplinary perspectives. Bill Kules and Jennifer McDaniel conducted content analysis of websites to determine what technology skills and knowledge LIS programs expect of their new students. They compared the expectations of traditional (classroombased) programs to programs that include online offerings. The results suggest more variability than consistency across programs and delivery modes. Scott Nicholson applied a Web 2.0 technology (YouTube) to deliver a course on gaming in libraries. Although the official enrollment was low, the YouTube videos were viewed by game developers, gamers, and other interested individuals, thus demonstrating that the use of such delivery platforms may extend the reach of LIS courses to other audiences. Finally, Jeanette Bastian, Ross Harvey, Martha Mahard, and Terry Plum discuss collaborative construction of a virtual archives and preservation curriculum laboratory at Simmons College. This laboratory was conceived to present the difficulties posed by digitized and born-digital content in the classroom, and in the context of the converging practices of archives, museums, electronic records management and preservation. …
