Principal Receives NMSA's 2010 Distinguished Educator Award

"Her drive, determination, and expertise converted a school in academic chaos and total disarray into our highest achieving middle school," wrote Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Eugene White about Yvonne Rambo. Rambo is the recipient of the 2010 NMSA Distinguished Educator Award presented at the NMSA Annual Conference in Baltimore.

Yvonne Rambo has been an educator for more than 25 years and is currently principal of Willard J. Gambold Middle School. Discovering NMSA's position paper, This We Believe, early in her career validated what she already knew was best for kids in this age group. "If we wrap ourselves around the whole child, and the community shares in the student's education, then the child will prosper," says Rambo. "The focus for the last three years in my current position has been to provide an equitable education and environment for any student that walks into our building."

Throughout her career she has been known among peers for outstanding instructional leadership and supervisory expertise. In particular, the district has called upon her to share strategies through mentoring of other administrators. As a member of the IPS Superintendent's Advisory Group, she has worked with colleagues throughout the district to develop strategies and policy recommendations around student achievement.

She directed a multi-million dollar renovation of the school building, complete with 21st century technology, and has partnered with the Lilly Corporation and Butler University on health and wellness and ESL education, respectively. …
