Editorial: Technology and the Future for JGE

Article excerpt

The November 2010 issue of JGE highlights the exciting instruction and research emerging from the geoscience education community today. The diversity of instructional approaches documented in Curriculum & Instruction papers, from simulation of an underground mine to project-based learning, reflect the diverse settings in which we are teaching about the Earth. Research papers this month similarly cover a wide array of topics and settings, from nature of science to motivation, and from peer instruction to online learning. Taken together, these papers provide a snapshot of our community, both in terms of what we value and the types of questions we find worth in asking.

This month marks the last time that JGE will be published as a paper-only journal. With this move, we will be able to disseminate our work much more quickly, and to a much broader authence. The geosciences can be the forgotten science among biology, physics and chemistry powerhouses, and online publication can help open other's eyes to the importance of geoscience education. Second, online publication allows our community to engage with other communities. …
