In the midst of a season of abundant riches for worship and hymn singing, this issue brings our annual conference report by the members of THE HYMN'S editorial advisory board. Along with their narrative are photographic and sketched impressions of the memorable week that some 250 members shared in Birmingham, Alabama.

Those July days on the Samford University campus brought an outstanding series of pie - naries devoted to our theme "Sing of justice, sing of peace." We are happy to present Dan C. Damon's address "A cry for justice in hymnody," and the significant work he and Eileen M. Johnson did in examining how justice topics have been addressed in our hymnals. Dan's words are visionary as well as practical, reflecting both a curious mind and a pastoral heart, and ultimately raising the question "Do our lives reflect our words?"

We are excited that THE HYMN returns to the practice of publishing Hymnic anniversaries in the Autumn issue, and especially pleased to welcome Carl P. Daw Jr., FHS, as contributing editor for this useful feature. It's a joy to be working once again with Carl, returning to the pages of The Hymn Society's journal after his 1996-2009 tenure as executive director. …
