In several issues of THE HYMN, Director of Research Tina Schneider has kept us informed in broad strokes about the many recent developments in The Hymn Society's largest and longest-running project, the Dictionary of North American hymnology. Now Tina, editor of the DNAH, and Harry Plantinga, director of Hymnary.org, have provided us with a feature-length report about the long history behind what has become a rapidly-expanding Web site; the plans for this "online hymn and worship music database for worship leaders, hymnologists, and amateur hymn lovers alike"; and a clear explanation of some of the complexities that lie "under the hood." We are excited not only to celebrate the important work being done, but to highlight the many ways in which our readers can contribute. We hope the cover, by John Wattai, THE HYMN'S fine design director, gives an idea of what an immense project our society has been supporting for several decades. Congratulations to Hymnary.org, for recently receiving a $266,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to carry forward this significant and muchneeded work!

Our newly-elected president of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, John Thornburg, makes a guest appearance on the page opposite. Those present in July at the HSUSC annual conference in Birmingham, Alabama, were both challenged and heartened by John's words as he assumed leadership of our society. Don't miss reading his remarks; I ask that all our membership be thinking about the future of the treasure we call The Hymn Society. …
