Brian Wren, FHS, well-known hymnwriter and professor of worship emeritus of Columbia Theological Seminary, has written a rich book for laity and study groups about hymns written and published since the 1960s. (College and seminary students and pastors should be reading Wren's more challenging Pmying twice: The music &nA words of congregational song Westminster John Knox Press, 2000.) The roster of authors will be familiar to Hymn Society members, as will the texts that appear. The volume includes fiftytwo complete texts and an equal number of partial texts, all woven together with Wren's engaging style that informs and draws us deeper into spiritual and theological understanding.

Each of the eight chapters includes three to eight "To do and discuss" ideas. After an introductory chapter, chapters focus on categories: Jesus, Spirit, church, worship, witness, and praise. The final chapter, "Treasure," contains complete texts that are indeed treasures. …
