During October 2010 we saw the results and conclusions of a project to identify open educational resources (OER) in public health topics and to make them freely available on line for a wider national and international audience.

Research undertaken during the project uncovered a variety of factors which prevent academics and practitioners in the field of public health from offering their materials as OER.

One area of concern is the practicality of keeping resources up to date and ensuring they are used appropriately, which is particularly important in this field, where out of date materials could contribute to life or death decisions. There is a growing realisation that the provider of the material continues to have a responsibility for keeping it up to date, and one way to facilitate this is for current students to actively use and learn from the OER materials from their own institution.

Some institutions initially voiced concerns about ownership of the materials and the investment of scarce resources to bring their teaching materials into a suitable format. …
