Education is very vital in the development of any nation, more importantly higher education. Unfortunately, the same higher education is faced with great challenges and difficulties ranging from individual personal problem, to institution and to general problems. The study investigated the perception of the students about the guidance services available to them. The study adopted descriptive survey twelve (12) universities consisting federal, state, and private universities from south-west geopolitical zone of Nigeria, 50 students comprises of male and female including undergraduates and post graduates were randomly selected from each of the universities. Five hypotheses were postulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data were collected with the use of "Available Guidance Services Questionnaire" (AGSQ) α =0.73 and analyzed with t-test. The students from sample universities had the same perception about the guidance services that were not in operation as they should be utilized. The findings will help each university authority and National University commission (NUC) to recommend the establishment and the functioning of guidance and counselling unit, staffing it with adequate professionals. They also should be monitored in order to fulfill its goals and the higher educational goals that would develop the nation and Africa as a whole.

Education is the bedrock of a nation's development. Education is said to be a medium of change, in knowledge and character. Adesemowo and Sotonade (2000) perceived education as an essential process in human development. Education has a lot to offer for the benefit of mankind. Omolewa (2003) corroborated this assertion that education undoubtedly continues to remain the most outstanding development priority area in Africa. He went further to say that the core purpose of education in human development is such that an educated person can acquire the relevant knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and interest as would enable him or her become the subject of development. To possess this unique quality, the individual would have to cross the bridge between secondary and world of work which is he higher education. Higher education is strictly a formal education which takes individual to their respective profession, hence it must not be toyed with if the people involve are to perform well, be productive in the areas of their profession and meet up with the goal set for it in the national development. At this era of entrepreneurship, when there are no jobs waiting for anyone but for the individual to create job for him or herself, higher education has a great hole to fill. This assertion is supported by Adesemowo and Ogunsanwo (2001) in the definition given to education as a process of developing a person intellectually and morally in order to equip him or her with the means of solving life's problem as they present themselves, both as an individual and as a member of a larger society. Higher education includes all types of studies, training or re-training for research at the post secondary level provided by universities or other educational establishments that are approved as an institution of higher learning. Everywhere education is faced with great challenges and difficulties related to financing equity of conditions at access into and during the course of studies, improved staff development, skill based training, enhancement and preservation of quality in teaching, research and services, relevance of programmes, employability of graduates, establishment of efficient cooperation agreement and equitable access to the benefits of international cooperation (UNESCO, 1998). Professional guidance counsellors cannot be neglected in accomplishing the goals set for higher education in the national development.
