A textbook with the title 'Professional Practice in Public Health' is setting itself a formidable challenge to cover not only the competence areas and skills but also all the many professional disciplines that contribute to public health. The title is, in fact, rather misleading as the book has an emphasis on environmental health and the role of environmental health practitioners is the subject of the last of three sections of this book. The book claims to be structured to be complementary to the competence framework for the UK Public Health Register but this may not be immediately obvious to the student or practitioner.

It is both a strength and a weakness of the book that it is almost entirely drawn from contributions from staff at one university (Greenwich). This results in an interesting and individual take on public health from authors from a wide range of backgrounds. On the other hand, the lack of a rationale for the contents and section structure means there is no clear link across these chapters. There are some welcome and important contemporary inclusions such as chapters on sustainable development, e-health and globalisation. …
