Rise up and sing: Children's music resource is an excellent introductory hymnbook for children. The style is reminiscent of a typical hymnal, but excludes harmony within the songs.

One of the greatest gifts of Rise up and sing is the wide variety of styles included. These styles range from traditional hymns, like "Amazing grace" and "For the beauty of the earth," to more recent tunes, including WHO AM ? and ONE BREAD, ONE BODY. At the end of this compilation there are patriotic hymns like "America" and "America the beautiful." There is a wide variety of hymns for almost all occasions.

There are a few items I wish this resource handled differently. For example, the children's resource itself does not give psalm-pointing directions. Though this is a minor detail, it would benefit children to have pointing directions in their musical resource to give them a better understanding of the music they are singing, and music they may encounter in the future. Though they are not in the resource itself, the resource lends itself to the possibility of having the children insert the pointing directions on their own. In addition to that, it would be nice to offer harmony lines in a few of the songs, starting with two-part harmonies and increasing to four-part harmonies in a couple of the hymns, again to prepare children for future musical endeavors.

The compact disc collection of vocal tracks available for purchase is a very useful rehearsal tool. …
