Civil Behavior Emerging from Japan's Tragedy

Article excerpt

Abstract

A lesson to be learned and a conscious question to be asked, based on the recent tsunami in Japan, which stunned the world, but also brought to the forefront, some traits of a people we could learn much from: the orderly, self-controlled and mutually responsible Japanese people.

The recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan was without a doubt one of the major natural disasters in our lifetime. Yet it did give us the opportunity to observe the behavior of the Japanese people in such dire circumstances. We can all learn from the stoicism, civility and courage which Japan showed the rest of the world.

I believe these are traits which all of us should demonstrate to a greater degree. If this tragedy had happened in Southern California, we would have seen unruly behavior, vandalism and gang warfare. We seem to have lost the characteristics that the Japanese have demonstrated. In times of tragedy and disaster, we must reach deeply within ourselves to find the strength and spirit that will allow us to rise above feelings of helplessness and despair which, allowed to run rampant, let us act in demeaning ways.

Furthermore, it is unfortunate that a natural disaster, such as the tsunami and earthquake in Japan, is needed to remind us of the continuity of life and the interconnectedness we have with all living things around us.
