Heinrich Seuse's 'autobiography', the Exemplar - whether or not he wrote it all himself or involved his spiritual daughter Elsbeth Stagel in its production - is a masterpiece of imaginative religious writing from the German lands in the fourteenth century, but it has only recently taken its place as part of the accepted literary canon. Its underlying philosophical and theological positions place it in the orbit of Meister Eckhart, but the construction of the work as a life built up out of exemplary narratives, philosophical reflection, and self-representation by the third-person 'servant of Divine Wisdom' means that a proper analysis needs to be founded on literary methodology. And even that may not be sufficient, as this CD publication, with its beautifully illustrated companion volume, appears to be suggesting. Some of the manuscripts contain a remarkable illustration cycle which must be, in some sense, 'authorial', or at least planned and sanctioned by the author. …
