This enterprising edition is the first of a new series which Salerno Editrice calls Testi e documenti di letteratura e di lingua'. It has chosen to concentrate, for its début, on the salutz d'amor, a literary genre in verse form, written in Medieval Occitan. This genre has attracted significant work, but never such an all-encompassing study. The essence of the salut lies in a message which the lover sends to his lady, begging her to return his love. If this feature is also found in the canso, it is no surprise, but the salut consistendy displays the epistolary introduction, keywords, and proverbial expressions. The metrical aspect is generally unremarkable with octosyllabic couplets dominating, but the stanzaic alternatives offer a degree of experimentation.
