Il trovatore Pare Milo, ed. Luciana Borghi Cedrini (Modena: Mucchi, 2008). 543 pp. ISBN 978-88-7000-513-4 euro40.00. The fact that the editions of the ten poems begin on p. 429 is a mark of the detailed analysis which Luciana Borghi Cedrini has given to all aspects of the work of Peire Milo, particularly the account of the language, which has long been a source of confusion and often aberrations, and which has till now been thoroughly neglected, along with the troubadour. That there should not have been an edition since Appel's (in 1890) and some commentary by Bertoni thereafter (1915), is remarkable, but not untypical in the field. This new edition setdes matters once and for all. The commentary on the dialect used by Peire Milo (perhaps north-western) is a model of clarity, perceptive and careful to distinguish what is central to it among the array of songbook readings which have preserved Peire Milo's poems. The notion of 'irregularity' is analysed in the light of our greater understanding of what is the norm in treating the literary language of the troubadours. …
