The main feature of this volume is an edition of the fifteenth-century prose novella based on the famous and hugely popular thirteenth-century verse Roman du Chastelaine de Vergi. Although the text has been edited five times before, none of these editions is readily available today; one of them, published in 1888, is now so rare that there is apparently not a single copy in the whole of France. Kosta-Théfaine identifies the subtle nuances that distinguish the prose version from its model, as well as noting the extensive addition of background narrative at the beginning of the story, and provides textual notes and a glossary. In addition, the volume contains an appendix of four related pieces. Two of these are substantial excerpts from texts available in other editions: the Livre d'amours du chevalier et de la dame chastellaine du vergier (1 540) and the seventieth novella of the Heptaméron, which is also based on the story of the Chastelaine de Vergy. …
