Eschewing extensive introductory notes, William Rothwell acts on his criticisms of the lack of attention to manuscript evidence and lexical complexity in previous treatments of Bibbesworth's Tretiz (cf. MLR, 77 (1982), 282-93) to present minimally emended editions of MSS G (Cambridge, University Library, Gg.1.1) and T (Cambridge, Trinity College, O.2.21). Each version is accompanied by its hidierto largely neglected Middle English glosses and by extensive footnotes drawn from the standard dictionaries of medieval French and English, permitting swift reference when the Tretiz presents its numerous lexical challenges. Writing in mid-thirteenth-century Essex upon the request of a patroness seeking to equip her children with appropriate competence in French, Bibbesworth presents in octosyllabic couplets contextualized and exemplified vocabulary dealing with the human body, me sounds of animals, the baking of bread, fishing, the weather, and much more. …
