Flamenca, romanzo occitano del secolo XIII, ed. Roberta Manetti (Modena: Mucchi, 2008). 639 pp. ISBN 978-8 8-7000-5 1 2-7. euro 30.00. It could have been no easy decision for Roberta Manetti to undertake the edition of flamenca: some 8,000 lines of verse in a single damaged manuscript, which lacks an ending and is often difficult to decipher, with a history of previous editions and detailed reviews which require detailed attention. It is a source of considerable satisfaction to be able to dedicate even a short review to this remarkable enterprise. The edition is preceded by an account of the content with its scene shifts, involved plot, and cast of many characters, so unlike the majority of works written in Occitan. There is an account of the attempts to identify the author, at least specifying his background and culture, if not identifying him. The edition itself has moved forward considerably in comparison with earlier ones. Ulrich Gschwind's, as Manetti says, provides a good starting point, but, as was clear from the moment of its publication, by common agreement, it was not to become the standard edition. …
