The German heroic epics are for the most part transmitted in 'Heldenbücher', collections or cycles with half a dozen or more long poems in sequence. Most of the texts have survived in several versions, and the student has to juggle conceptually with the variation, on the one hand, between different 'texts' (like Ortnit A/k, C, D, and E), each of which may survive in different recensions (like Ortnit D, recensions a, e, y, and z), some of these represented by several manuscripts, and on the other hand the grouping together of sets of epic poems in the collections, the 'Heldenbücher'. This edition presents the fragmentary text of the 'Berlin- Wolfenbütteler Heldenbuch' from c. 1 300 (with Virginal V3, Eckenlied 'E3, Ortnit C, and Wolfdietrich C), and the much more substantial text of the 'Dresdener Heldenbuch' of c. 1472 (with Oriniti, Wolfdietrich k, Eckenlied E7, Rosengarten R , Meerwunder A, SigenotS6, WundererW1, Herzog Ernst G1, Laurin L11, Virginal Nn, 2nd Jüngeres Hildebrandslied D). …
