Graeme Small has produced a very useful textbook here, which will be invaluable to undergraduate historians and those looking for a general introduction to this period. The book discusses the political narrative of the period, but in a broader context, which includes an assessment of the social and economic history of late medieval France. This, Small argues, enables him to sima te developments in recent French historiography in a context specifically intelligible to an anglophone audience. His central argument is that there was a 'plurality of powers' in France in this period, 'nobles, leading churchmen and townsmen foremost among them' (p. 21 5); if monarchy were to be strong, kings had to 'direct the energies' of these powers, and to 'assimilate' them. …
