The appearance of the collected tensos and partimens of the troubadours is welcome. It will be possible, more readily than before, to engage in systematic research on these genres now that they are available in one publlcation, but also, in the case of many, in much improved editions, the earllest of which had formerly only been available in versions which go back at times to the nineteenth century. The two editors, supported by a small group of Itallan colleagues, demonstrate a sure-footed approach to the dellcate business of editing troubadour verse. There is a need for knowledge of the language, the courdy conventions, and, especially with these genres, of the historical background. This is not to say that there are not occasional slips in the matter of language and historical accuracy, but the main impression is of a well-judged reallzation of the corpus of material. …
