La Prise d'Orange: Chanson de geste (fin Xlle-début XIIIe tiède), ed. and trans. Claude Lachet, Champion Classiques (Paris: Champion, 2010). 280 pp. ISBN 978-2-7453-2068-1. euro11.00. This volume in the useful and very affordable 'Champion Classiques' series offers an edition with modern French translation of the Prise d'Orange, together with a substantial introduction, a bibliography, sample extracts from other redactions of the text, an extensive glossary, and a list of the proverbial sayings included in the text. Acknowledging that the ?' family of manuscripts transmits a version of the text closest to the 'archetype', Claude Lachet bases his edition on one of these (Paris, BnF, MS f. fr. 1449), making only minimal corrections. The introduction situates the Prise d'Orange in the context of the Guillaume d'Orange cycle and examines the evidence for its roots in historical reality - admittedly slight, as the text is almost entirely fictional - and for its relationship to a now lost, earlier version of the story, as well as exploring the quaUties that cause this particular text to stand out from the others in the cycle. …
