The present volume offers twenty-one essays, plus introduction and conclusion, examining a variety of French Uterary anthologies from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Though wide-ranging in its coverage, the volume does draw some unity from the fact that certain authors - in particular, Christine de Pizan, Jean Gerson, Charles d'Orléans, François Villon, Alain Chartier, and Georges Chastellain - are treated repeatedly, and from different perspectives, by two or more of the contributors. In the introductory essay, Van Hemelryck and Marzano set the tone for the essays that follow with their meditation on the nature of the 'recueil'.
