With this volume, Jean- Loup Lemaitre and Françoise Vieilliard complete the reproduction of the miniature portraits of troubadours contained in the major medieval chansonniers: MSS I (BnF, f. fr. 854) and K (BnF, f. fr. 12473) from the Bibliothèque nationale and MS A from the Vatican Library. Their first volume covered MSS I and K and appeared in 2006. This volume, covering just the one manuscript, A (Vat. lat. 5232), is as de luxe as anyone could have wished for, with full-page illustrations of forty-five historiated initials and another two plates containing the eight portrait images from MS H. As the libraries that hold these manuscripts, especially the Bibliothèque nationale de France, make these documents increasingly harder to access, the quality of this publication is a real bonus for anyone interested in the very rare thirteenth-century medieval portraits that accompanied the songs.
