This volume brings together a selection of papers arising out of a conference in Toulouse in 2007 on the European dissemination of the literary theme of assemblies of women. The editors' introduction highlights previous critical neglect of this tradition, its issues of women's reported speech and female knowledge, and the consumption and circulation of such works. Attention is also drawn to the varied approaches required by the disparate and diverse nature of source material. After an introductory essay by Danielie Bohler tracing precursors to this late medieval tradition, the coliection is aptly framed by studies of the production and circulation (Koopmans) and the reception (Madeleine Jeay) of Les Evangiles des quenouilles, the most influential (translated and imitated) assembly-of-women text, and the earliest work considered here. …
