(LETTER TO EDITOR)

This is with reference to the column by Irfan Husain 'Beyond our moral radar' (Nov 10). I appreciate the objective and dispassionate analysis on human rights record and selective moral standards of different countries put under test in the article.

However, his statement that reasons for Pakistan's isolation in 1971 was consequent upon army action to crush a popular movement in East Pakistan is only partially true. Perhaps, Irfan Husain may have read the book, The Separation of East Pakistan, by Hassan Zaheer, who belonged to the Civil Service of Pakistan (1954 batch). He was posted in East Pakistan in his early days of service and later at the time of the Pakistan Army's surrender.

The book has been widely acknowledged locally and internationally as the most authentic account on causative factors and reasons that led to the dismemberment of Pakistan. …
