The life and work of Alfred Habdank Skarbek Korzybski, the originator of general semantics and a great twentieth-century humanitarian who dedicated his life to ameliorating human stupidity through a scientific-philosophical reorientation of humanity, one individual at a time, is extensively and compellingly presented in this first full-length biography (692 pages).

The author, Bruce I. Kodish, who with his wife Susan Presby Kodish wrote Drive Yourself Sane: Using the Uncommon Sense of General Semantics (recently published in its Third Edition), spent seven years researching and writing this life history, which contains many intriguing details of Korzybski's incredibly adventurous and significant life (e.g., his dislike of flying, his conflicting views of "the Jews," his many-sided relationship with his wife). The book also examines the motivating forces that drove Korzybski to create the field and ideas of general semantics; why he and his work have become the object of widely and wildly different reactions by supporters and detractors; the relevance that Korzybski and his work have for us today; and why general semantics still matters to twenty-first century culture and concerns. …
