This book contains twelve incisive and probing essays written by Corey Anton, a Grand Valley State University Professor of Communication Studies and an Institute of General Semantics trustee. The pieces deal with a broad-based multidisciplinary orientation to speech, language, symbol-use, alphabetic literacy, communication technologies, and more. They integrate and advance the fields of general semantics and media ecology.

The book is divided into four main parts. Part I, "Pedagogical Orientations," offers a pair of readings that celebrate and encourage the practice of study, a habit that is essential to better understand the workings of GS and media ecology and all too often bypassed by college students in these frenetic times. Part II, "Explorations in General Semantics," provides linguistic insights from scholars such as Gregory Bateson and Walker Percy and analysis of the revolutionary importance of "negative" GS principles (e.g., "the word is not the thing," "the map is not the territory").
