Butler Center Books has published From Carnegie to Cyberspace: 100 Years at the Central Arkansas Library System. The authors, Shirley Schuette and Nathania Sawyer, are members of the staff of the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, doubtless well known to readers of the Quarterly. This is a handsome and useful book, going beyond the usual commemorative volume. In addition to text and illustrations, several appendices contain the mission and values of the library system; the names and terms of service of library administrators, trustees, and outstanding staff members; and information about awards, lecture series, and collection and circulation numbers. Although the book is aimed at the general reader, it is carefully documented and includes a detailed bibliography.

Following an introduction placing the Central Arkansas story in the larger history of public libraries in the United States, the book details the evolution of CALS from its very modest beginnings in efforts of civic groups to provide library services to the public. …
