In dulci jubilo

Three Advent/Christmas pieces for brass quintet and organ, arr. David Giardiniere [two trumpets, horn in F, trombone, and tuba, with optional organ]. MorningStar Music Publishers (MSM-20-210)

This is a fine contribution to the hymn- based literature for brass and organ. Since the organ part is optional, the pieces can be just as rewarding when played by brass alone. Another positive aspect of this collection is that the organ used can be of any size, since conventional registrations are used throughout the pages. The brass parts are well within the range of the instruments and can generally be played by amateurs with moderate skill levels.

The selected hymn tunes include IN dulcí jubilo, COVENTRY CAROL, and COMFORT, COMFORT YE MY PEOPLE. The third is probably the most demanding, with its constantly mixed meters and moving tuba line. The last section, however, reproduces the conventional J. S. Bach harmony, and expected part movements in a stately 4/4 time signature.

IN dulcí jubilo opens with soft dynamics; the first trumpet leads the tune throughout the first stanza, then shares it with second trumpet, horn, and trombone on further repeats as the sounds expand to / levels to complete this fine rendition. …
