Dear Middle Grades Educators:

As your new executive director, it is with great humility that I congratulate you for your dedication to working with young adolescents. Along with you, we are "dedicated to improving the educational experiences of young adolescents by providing vision, knowledge, and resources to all who serve them in order to develop healthy, productive, and ethical citizens." This, the mission statement of our association, remains the anchor that focuses us on our purpose.

I am pleased to announce that our name has changed. After years of research by several task forces that gained feedback from thousands of stakeholders, followed by a resounding vote from membership, National Middle School Association (NMSA) is now the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE). In spring 2011, the new name was placed on the ballot and passed by more than the two-thirds majority vote required for a constitutional change. The Board of Trustees certified the new name at its June 2011 meeting. Our name has changed, but our mission remains the same.

So what can you expect from the association? I have identified four areas of focus for AMLE for the next year. To start, I believe people come first. We must invest in and support all who contribute to the work of the association and find ways to tell our story through our members. Second, everything AMLE does in the coming years must focus on delivering what middle level educators need using This We Believe as a framework. AMLE will deliver priority programs using quality educational content that meets the needs of our members. This focus will attract additional educators to join and support the association's mission.
