President Barack Obama on January 4, 2012 made recess appointments of nominees Terence Flynn, Sharon Block, and Richard Griffin as Members to the National Labor Relations Board. Flynn, who will be the Board's second Republican member alongside current Member Brian Hayes, previously served as chief counsel to former Board Member Peter Schaumber. Block was the Department of Labor's deputy assistant secretary for congressional affairs. She also worked, from 2006 to 2009, as senior labor and employment counsel for the Senate HELP Committee, where she worked for Senator Edward M. Kennedy. Griffin, who will be the third Democrat on the Board, is currently general counsel for the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE). He served from 1981 to 1983 as counsel to NLRB board members.

NLRB Chairman Mark Gaston Pearce and Acting General Counsel Lafe E. Solomon announced that Peter Sung Ohr will be the new Regional Director in the Chicago Regional Office (Region 13). Ohr, who takes over from Joseph Barker following Barker's retirement, will be responsible for the enforcement of the nation's primary labor law covering private sector employees in Cook, Du Page, Kane, Lake, and Will Counties in Illinois, and Lake County in Indiana.
